SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - The Sanford Mainers rode patient approaches at the plate and aggressive baserunning to a 15-9 win over the Ocean State Waves on Tuesday night, moving to 8-3 on the season.
The Mainers got back to their bread and butter early on, running wild on the basepaths. Nick Zampieron and Jake Harring each walked to start the game, then pulled off a double-steal to get to second and third. A passed ball allowed Zampieron to score the first run of the game.
In the second, Harring hit an RBI knock, scoring Jack Tate and Brooks Perez. The bottom half of the frame saw Ocean State's Brodey Bitove singling to drive in the first Waves run. After three, it was 3-1 Sanford.
The Moose got loose in the fourth inning, putting five runs on the board to blow the game open. The inning included Harring collecting his third RBI of the day on a base-hit, as well as catcher Brennan Staubley driving in two on a single with the bases loaded and two outs. Sanford led 8-1.
Ocean State chipped into the deficit to make it 8-3, but Sanford responded with a crooked number in the seventh. The Waves had their fair share of self-inflicted wounds, and this inning was an example of it. A passed ball scored Perez (who reached base on all six plate appearances), and a balk allowed pinch runner Sam Miller to trot home. Sanford kept the line moving, as Harring's RBI groundout scored Zampieron to make it 11-3.
The Mainers tacked on insurance runs in the top of the eighth to make it 15-3. With the game well out of hand, Ocean State gave itself something to feel good about in the final few innings. First, catcher Cameron Pipetti hit a two-run shot in the eighth to make it 15-5. Then, in the ninth, Justin Hackett's RBI single brought the lead to single-digits. Brodey Bitove then hit a three-run blast to right that made it 15-9, until the Mainers retired the side to end the game.
"It's nice to see guys get some good swings off, catching the barrels. A little feel-good day," said hitting coach Jack LeBlond. When discussing the patience at the plate, he said, "walks turn into runners in scoring position real quick with the speed we have."
Sanford is 4-0 on the road. That unbeaten mark away from home gets put to the test tomorrow with a matchup at Keene. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
