SANFORD, M.E. - It was a marathon day of baseball between the Mainers and SteepleCats, who played two seven-inning games on Sunday. North Adams got its first win of the season in an 8-2 victory, but Sanford got revenge in game two, winning 11-3.
Game One: In game one, the 'Cats jumped out to a two-run lead after the second inning. Nicolas Lobello had an RBI groundout to third, and Colsen Loughren singled to score Evan Meier.
With the score 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, North Adams blew it wide open. The SteepleCats sent everyone to the plate and scored five runs, highlighted by Lobello's double to left that scored two of them. North Adams scored more runs in that fifth inning than it had in an entire game all season, and it was 8-0.
Sanford tacked on two after a triple by Nater Wachter, but the 'Cats held on for the 8-2 win.
Game Two: Sanford was forced to quickly put the sting of game one behind them and regroup for game two, and that they did.
Sanford loaded the bases with nobody out in the first, and Troy Carpenter made sure they wouldn't be stranded. The shortstop drilled a bases-clearing three-RBI double to left. Carpenter then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 Mainers.
Carpenter finished the day with three doubles between the two games. "Just getting on the heaters and not missing them," he said, when discussing his mindset. "We're bound to explode like that. We just have fun out there."
Sanford topped that offensive performance in the third. Sanford scored seven runs, its most in an inning this season. The Moose tallied hit after hit, with the inning highlighted by a double from Sam Miller, who scored two.
The 'Cats tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth, but it was far too little too late, and Sanford won 11-3.
The Mainers hit the road on Tuesday for a showdown with Ocean State at 6:30 p.m.
