SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers continued to take care of business against the Vermont Mountaineers on Monday, sweeping a doubleheader. The first contest was a resumption of a suspended game on July 1st. The Mainers came back to win it 9-6. They then moved to 5-0 against the Mountaineers this season with a 6-4 victory in the second game.
Game one: The Mainers were down 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning when the game had been suspended almost two weeks ago. When action resumed, the 'Neers got after it offensively, plating a run in the fourth and two in the sixth to make it 5-1, but the Mainers didn't give up.
With the bases loaded in the seventh, Sam Miller hit an RBI groundout. Albert De La Rosa then singled through the left side to plate two runs, and then came in to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5.
The Moose grabbed a lead they would never surrender in the eighth when catcher Dom Tozzi roped a two-RBI double into the gap in left-center. Sanford got insurance by way of another De La Rosa RBI knock that scored both Brian Connolly and Tozzi.
The Mainers gave up one run after that but held on to win 9-6.
Game two: The second game followed a similar script, as the Mainers fell behind early but quickly erased the deficit.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Sanford had the bases loaded and nobody out, until Vermont retired the next two hitters. It appeared the 'Neers may get out of a serious jam, but Mainers outfielder Jack Tate made sure that didn't happen. With two outs and the bases still juiced, the St. John's product roped a bases-clearing triple to right, and when Brendan Sencaj singled right after him, it was 4-1 Moose.
Vermont came back to make it a one-run contest with two runs in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of that frame, however, the Mainers pulled ahead. Jake Harring dropped a bunt down the third base side, and a Vermont throwing error allowed two runs to come across and Harring to reach third.
Matt Mahoney sealed the deal for Sanford in the seventh and final inning with a perfect frame and the Mainers won 6-4.
The Mainers remain atop the NECBL's North division. They are back in action on Wednesday at North Shore, who currently sits in second place. That game begins at 6:05 p.m. on ESPN+.
