SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers showed why they came into the night ranked first in ERA. The Moose rode more quality pitching to a 4-1 win over the Mystic Schooners on Sunday evening.
Florida International transfer Bryson Thacker toed the rubber for the Mainers. The lefty had quite the acts to follow, after Sanford starting pitching had let up a combined two runs in the last three games. It turned out that Thacker was up to the task. The former West Virginia hurler relied on his fastball early and often, which he commanded well. He tossed five innings, giving up two hits and no runs. He struck out six and walked just one Mystic hitter.
The Mainers gave Thacker insurance right off the bat. Infielder Brian Connolly singled off Schooners' starter Connor Shaw to score Jake Harring, and Sanford led 1-0. It put Connolly up to seven RBI in his last five games.
In the fourth, Troy Carpenter appeared to be grounding into a double play. His grounder to short was fired to second for one out, but the throw to first base was errant. Jack Tate scored from second, and it was 2-0.
Tate drove in a run just an inning later on a single to right that allowed Steven Kraus to touch home. Sanford added a fourth run in the sixth when Harring hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring Carpenter home.
The Schooners scored their only run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Christian Butera.
Sanford relievers Ian Mowad, Ben Griffith and Sam Young combined to throw the final four innings, helping secure a 4-1 Mainers win. Mowad tossed two scoreless, as he made his final appearance of the summer for the Moose.
Sanford sweeps the season series against Mystic and now owns the second-best record in the NECBL at 19-11. The Mainers can improve on that mark when they host the Vermont Mountaineers tomorrow at home. First off is a resumption of a suspended game, with a seven-inning contest to follow. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+.
